A Typical Day for Staff
Counselors begin their day at 7:30 with waking up their campers and getting them ready for “Morning Watch” (devotions by the lake). After Morning Watch, all staff and campers head to the dining hall for breakfast. After breakfast, everyone heads back to their cabins to participate in Cabin Cleanup, which counselors supervise. Cabins are scored for cleanliness each day, the highest scoring cabin at the end of the week will win an ice cream party on the last night of camp!
Morning activities start after cabin clean-up. Each cabin will go together to three different activities each morning. Counselors have one of two jobs – an Activity Leader, or an Activity Counselor. Activity Leaders teach and instruct different cabins at one specific activity (i.e canoeing, archery, zip-line, etc). Activity Counselors lead their cabin around to each activity, interacting with their campers and often participating in the activities themselves. Both positions are great fun and very rewarding!
When the Bell rings to end morning activities, everyone reports to the dining hall for lunch. After lunch, the entire camp enjoys rest time. When rest time is over cabin time begins. After rest time Counselors are assigned a duty each afternoon for free time – it may be helping out in the Camp Store, leading an activity, or “roaming” to keep watch over the campers. Everyone reports to the dining hall for dinner when free time is over.
Evenings are a blast at Camp Oak Hill! During our evening program the entire camp comes together for games and events. Some of the programs will be splashing around at a pool party, getting dirty in some messy extreme games, or getting out you camouflage and hiding from your campers in Counselor Hunt! All counselors and campers participate in evening programs.
Following the evening program we will all gather together for a short campfire. This is a time to wind down, sing some praise songs, and listen to counselors or other campers share their testimony or perform a short skit.
Following the evening campfire, everyone heads back to their cabins for showers and devotions. Counselors plan and lead a short devotion for the campers in their cabin (usually 15-30 minutes) – sometimes this is done alone, other times co-counselors choose to work together on devotions.
After Hours is a privilege given to counselors each night after devotions are finished. Beginning at 10:30, counselors are free to leave their cabin for relaxing or enjoying some fellowship with other counselors. One counselor stays in the cabin each night, so co-counselors alternate nights for After Hours. All counselors must be in their cabins by 12:00am.
