+Meet Our Staff
Our purpose is to provide leadership, facilities and programs that challenge youth to make Jesus Christ Savior and Lord of their lives. We are dedicated to helping boys and girls to become what God created them to be through dynamic Christian leadership and a variety of learning experiences. Camp Oak Hill’s program is designed to contribute to the physical, mental and spiritual development of each camper, thus enhancing their chances of achieving the “Abundant Life” promised in God’s Word.
(Luke 5:1-11; Matthew 5:1-2, 28:19-20; John 1:35-43)
Camp Oak Hill occupies 100 acres in northern Granville County, 18 miles north of Oxford, on the site of the old Oak Hill High School. The high school opened in 1919 and served its educational role until it closed in 1973. It was purchased in 1976 and given to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of the Carolinas, Inc., in memory of J. Gregory Poole, Sr., a member of the first graduating class of Oak Hill High School.
Through the vision of the founders this property was developed into a Christ-honoring, youth- oriented facility. High school FCA huddles used the facility for retreats, painting rooms to match their school colors and enjoying competition, food and fellowship. Vandalized and aging facilities were refurbished little by little. Ten acres adjoining the original 15-acre site were purchased and graded for athletic fields, in coordination with the construction of a dam and formation of a 3-acre lake.
The first summer camp session was held in 1976 for two weeks with 33 boys and girls. Four all-weather tennis courts were built and Hal and Wiley Thompson made a financial contribution to renovate the gymnasium building.
In 1978, FCA of the Carolinas, Inc., was renamed the Oak Hill Fellowship Center, Inc., recognizing its unique role as a regional Christian summer youth camp and retreat center. In 1982, the Irene Poole Dining Hall was dedicated, greatly increasing the function and beauty of camp and retreat food service.
Meanwhile, the summer camp enrollment continued to rise each year as facilities were upgraded and four duplex cabins were build in 1986. The Robert M. Logan, Sr. Memorial Swimming Pool opened for summer use in 1987 and a rappelling tower was added for the summer of 1990.
An added porch on the dining hall, new cabins and a fresh coat of paint increased the beauty of Camp Oak Hill in 2001 and our 8th cabin was completed in June 2002. The summer of 2003 saw the opening of the 9.5 acre lake, complete with zipline, climbing wall and a small outdoor beach.
On May 27, 2005, the 10,000 square foot Activity & Fellowship Center was completed, providing awesome meeting space for retreat groups and campers.
A new low ropes course was added the summer of 2007. Providing 14 elements of adventure, this is a great option for teambuilding skills and fun.
In 2008 all of our cabins became air-conditioned!
As Camp Oak Hill continues to grow by leaps and bounds, the vision of reaching more people for Christ through the ministry of Oak Hill is renewed afresh with each passing year.
